Legal Permanent Residency, also known as a Green Card
US Immigration law provides several routes for persons to become Legal Permanent Residents:
FAMILY
Persons who are petitioned for Legal Permanent Residency by a family member who is a U.S. Citizen or a Legal Permanent Resident. Waiting times vary significantly depending on factors such as:
the closeness of the relationship with the petitioning family member,
the immigration status of your relative (US Citizen versus US Legal Permanent Resident),
whether you are married or single and on
your country of birth.
EMPLOYMENTSPONSORSHIP
Persons who are petitioned by a US company who can not find a US employee with the needed education and experience to fill a certain job. Persons seeking their US Legal Permanent Residency through their employer must undergo the PERM process. The PERM process requires that the employer demonstrate to the U.S. Department of Labor that it has made efforts to recruit U.S. workers to fill the job for which the immigrant is being hired and that such efforts have been unsuccessful.
